Ossett 13 - York RI 12
A FANTASTIC per-formance from Ossett extended their unbeaten league record at home and inflicted defeat on Yorkshire 4 leaders Institute.
Having been out of action for more than a month, both teams started the game at a high tempo but the defences held firm and Ossett's Ian Whitehead and Jack Peat put in particularly big tackles.
The deadlock was finally broken when York converted a penalty but parity was restored when Jack Drury kicked a penalty of his own.
A fine tackle from Duncan Kitts in the corner denied a try on the stroke of half-time but York began the second period strongly and two penalties put them 9-3 up.
Ossett also lost Clinton North to the sin bin but they rallied and Tom Sprott and Chris Briggs made good ground while intelligent kicking from Andy Bell forced the table-toppers to retreat.
The hosts made the pressure tell when Bell's up-an-under was fum-bled by the York full-back and Joe Ellis scooped up the ball before diving over.
The try was converted by Drury to put Ossett 10-0 ahead but the lead was short-lived and another penalty put Railway Institute back in front at 12-10.
Ellis missed a chance to convert a long-range penalty. However, an easier opportunity soon followed and this time, Drury stepped-up to give Ossett a 13-12 advantage.
Peat was awarded the man of the match trophy for Ossett, who will aim to break their away duck when they travel to second-placed Roth-erham Phoenix to-morrow, Saturday.
