Ossett Albion's UniBond League future plunged into doubt with Mossley defeat
Mossley 2 Ossett Albion 1
OSSETT Albion's UniBond Premier League future took a huge blow at the weekend as Mossley piled a sixth consecutive defeat on Eric Gilchrist's men to leave them five points adrift of safety in Division 1 North.
Andy Brownrigg's second-half strike proved a consolation as goals from Graham Kay and Lee Blackshaw put the Warehouse Systems Stadium club to the sword in Lancashire.
It leaves Albion with 12 games to save their UniBond League status - starting with a huge game at home against nearest rivals Harrogate Railway Athletic on Tuesday night.
Albion got off to the worst possible start when Mossley opened their account as early as the seventh minute.
Nick Allen's cross was headed in by Kay, giving Albion stopper Ben Saynor no chance.
Mossley came close to doubling their lead when Chris McDonagh saw an effort saved by Saynor as the hosts bossed the opening exchanges.
They should have grabbed their second from the penalty spot after a sloppy challenge by Shane Kelsey, making his 100th start for the club, saw the referee point to the spot.
But Saynor kept the visitors in the game with a stunning save to deny McDonagh.
The save seemed to spark Albion into liffe and Kelsey started to cause problems at the right end of the pitch for the visitors.
Stopper Peter Collinge was equal to an effort from Albion's top-scorer before appeals for an Albion penalty fell on deaf ears after Kelsey appeared to be fouled inside the box.
Albion were given further hope minutes before half-time when Kay was sent-off for a retaliation kick on Kelsey.
But despite the man advantage for Albion it was Mossley who looked the more threatening in the second half.
Saynor made superb stops to deny McDonagh and Mike Fish and keep the visitors in the game.
Mossley's missed chances looked to come back to haunt them when Albion enjoyed their best spell of the match midway through the second half.
Kelsey saw a free-kick glance the crossbar before Brownrigg levelled just before the hour mark.
Albion should have taken the initiative from the leveller but instead they sat back and allowed Mossley to regain control - a sign of the poor confidence levels among the Albion players.
Lee Blackshaw restored Mossley's advantage just ten minutes later and the scoreline could have been greater had Saynor not pulled off a number of key saves.
Albion: Saynor, Hopkins, Jackson, White, Stimpson, Brownrigg, James, Campagna, Hamlet, Kelsey, Richardson. Subs: Entley, Thompson, Senior, Parker, Cundall.
