Ossett Albion remain in relegation trouble
AFC Fylde 2 Ossett Albion 0
OSSETT Albion matched hosts AFC Fylde for an hour in their crucial UniBond Division 1 North clash on Saturday but missed chances came back to haunt them in Lancashire.
The mid-table hosts edged the game in terms of possession but it was the Warehouse Systems Stadium who carved out the best chances, only for second-half goals from Matt Walwyn and Jason Dodwell to give Fylde all three points and leave Albion in the thick of relegation trouble.
On a fine playing surface both sides were intent on playing good football with the ball on the ground and it provided an entertaining spectacle for both sets of supporters.
The game constantly swung from end-to-end with the respective sides adopting an ambitious, attacking approach to the game.
Jason Bentley had the first real chance for the visitors but he sent his low effort just wide of Lewis Edge's goal, while the Albion striker came inches away from connecting to a dangerous Shane Kelsey cross as Ossett started well.
Fylde responded and Phil Doughty came close to breaking the deadlock before Albion defender Kyle Cook could count himself lucky to see a clearence off the line come crashing back off the woodwork and into the arms of Ben Saynor.
The hosts finished the first 45 minutes the stronger and Danny Penswick fired an effort just wide.
Albion came flying out of the traps on the resumption though and carved out a number of chances in front of goal.
Bentley and Kelsey both wasted good chances before Fylde goalkeeper Edge was equal to a Joe Thornton free-kick.
The visitors were enjoying their best spell of the match but they couldn't take their chances and were made to pay as the hosts took the lead on 67 minutes.
Albion caused their own downfall as Walwyn latched on to a throughball and breezed through the visitors defence before slotting a cool finish by the advancing Saynor to break the deadlock.
To Albion's credit they didn't throw in the towel and kept plugging away for what would have been a deserved equalser.
Kelsey saw a free-kick comfortably saved before Edge made te save of the day to deny substitute Gareth Hamlet.
Albion were pushing men forward in search of a leveller and in stoppage time the hosts secured their three points when substitute Dodwell sent a superb 30-yard drive into the top corner.
Defeats leaves Albion five points ahead of the Division 1 North relegation places going into their big clash at FC Halifax Town on Tuesday night (kick-off 7.45pm).
Albion: Saynor, Jackson, Cook, Hopkins, Thornton, White, James Senior, Bentley, Kelsey, Richardson. Substitutes: Hamlet, Harber, Oxer, Parker, Ryan.
