Ossett Albion slip into relegation zone

Ossett Albion 0 Colwyn Bay 2

OSSETT Albion's battle against relegation from UniBond Division 1 North suffered a blow as Eric Gilchrist's men slipped into the relegation zone with a 2-0 home defeat against high-flying Colwyn Bay.

Second-half goals from Neil Black and Ian Sheridan gave the promotion-chasing Welsh side all three points at the Warehouse Systems Stadium.

Albion have been looking over their shoulders at the drop-zone all season but, with other results going against them, defeat against Bay saw them fall into the bottom two.

The hosts were more than a match for their high-flying opponents for over an hour before Albion's unwanted habit of conceding late goals returned to haunt them.

Gilchrist's men made a bright start and carved out the better early chances but the absence of a real cutting edge in front of goal saw the score remain goalless.

Top scorer Shane Kelsey and Dave Syers, who has returned to Albion from Farsley Celtic, both came close for the hosts while at the other end Bay's Dannyn Meadowcroft placed a header wide of Ben Saynor's goal.

Defences were on top throughout the first half with scoring chances at a premium and the 0-0 half-time scoreline was a fair reflection on the contest.

Albion started the second half on the front foot and recent signing James Nestor steered an effort wide of the woodwork when he should have done better.

Nathan James fired a shot off target while Syers also came close to breaking the deadlock as Albion pushed for a breakthrough.

Bay had plenty of the ball in the second half but the stubborn Albion defence refused to let them through.

As the half wore on the visitors looked more threatening and the opener came as no surprise.

Crewe Alexandra loanee Alex Titchener was introduced from the bench and he made an immediate impression, charging forward before threading a pass for Black to fire home from point-blank range to break the deadlock.

Two minutes later the issue was all but settled when Daniel Stimpson was pulled out of position by Greg Stones' run down the opposite flank.

Stimpson was muscled off the ball and a low ball into the Albion six-yard box found Titchener who crashed a shot by Saynor to double the visitors' advantage.

Albion skipper Ryan White did all he could to help their cause and his work-rate was more than impressive throughout but another three points conceded plunged Albion deeper into the relegation mire.

Albion: Saynor, Hopkins, Jackson, White, Stimpson, Brownrigg, James, Syers, Nestor, Kelsey, Richardson. Subs: Hamlet, Bentley, Campagna, Ashforth, Ryan.
