Returning Denton inspires Wakefield FC to West Riding County Cup success

Wakefield FC 6 Liversedge 3 RETURNING loan star Tom Denton bagged a brace to help freescoring Wakefield FC to the last four of the West Riding County Cup with a resounding victory over Liversedge at College Grove.

The Huddersfield Town striker, who has returned to the UniBond Division 1 North club on an initial one month loan, scored either side of half-time as Ronnie Glavin's men put their Northern Counties East League opponents to the sword in comfortable fashion.

The rout started just five minutes in at a chilly College Grove as captain Chris Howarth fired into an open goal from close range.

The visitors were still in the game early on an posed a threat of their own as Jan Zolna was forced into a fine save to deny Scott Ryan from point-blank range.

But Wakefield's quality soon showed and Craig Laight doubled the hosts' advantage with a powerful header from a corner.

It was 3-0 seven minutes later, this time Danny South firing his own bullet header by visiting stopper Stuart Wilkinson from a Howarth cross.

Liversedge did find a way back into the game before the half-hour mark as Jamie Wasley struck a sweet volley beyond Zolna to give them a life-line.

But the hosts all-but secured their passage into the last four of the competition with two strikes before the interval.

Denton grabbed the first of his double in scrappy fashion by bundling the ball over the line from a corner.

Chris Howarth was then felled inside the box minutes before half-time and he picked himself up to drill the ball home for Wakefield's fifth.

It looked like it was going to be more of the same on the resumption as Denton grabbed his second in dramatic style, lashing a superb volley into the roof of the net from a Howarth cross.

The Bears' strike duo looked in perfect harmony throughout and Bears fans will no doubt be eager to see them in action together in the league.

But following the sixth, Wakefield took their foot off the gas and allowed the visitors back into it.

Liversedge's best spell of the match midway through the second half resulted in them twice finding the back of the net as the match came to a close.

But Wakefield were never in danger of losing their lead and progressed to the last four in comfortable fashion.
