Rugby Union: Sandal out to attack table toppers Chester
James Briscoe
Head coach Jim Kilfoyle will be sending his Sandal team out to attack National 3 North leaders Chester when the two sides meet at Milnthorpe Green tomorrow, Saturday.
Sandal lie third and in with a chance of promotion following a run of nine wins and one draw from their last 10 games.
Kilfoyle’s men also boast a 100 per-cent home record - the only such record still intact in the league - but Chester will surely pose the biggest threat to ending Sandal’s dominance on home turf.
The Milnthorpe Green men have lost only three times so far this season and their heaviest (and last) defeat came at Chester in October.
However, Kilfoyle is confident that his side can upset the table toppers, saying: “Chester are talented but we will get at them with pace.
“Don’t rule us out, that’s all I will say.
“In Chester we kicked badly and they hit us with counter-attacks so we will have to learn from that.”
Kilfoyle has no intentions of trying to contain the Cheshire visitors and abandon Sandal’s free-flowing attacking instincts, saying: “There is no way forward in playing like that.
“We played really well last week [in beating Lymm] and played a fast, structured game.”
Number eight Sam Whittingham and winger Alex Orr are both unavailable but flanker James Briscoe returns from a hamstring injury. Prop John Warwick and young second rower Tom Cotterill are recalled to the squad and will get the chance to impress Kilfoyle.
Sandal squad v Chester (home, kick off 2.15pm): T Coad, J Ellar, J Allott, M Pease, D Martin, S Frewin, G Wood, M Whittingham, L Norbury, J Heron, R Norbury, J Warwick, A Thompson, J Stewart, T Cotterill, S Maguire, J Gatus, J Briscoe.
