Sensational Sandal demolish league leaders Chester
Sandal produced a brilliant performance to defeat National 3 North leaders Chester 51-28 and extend their 100 per-cent home record.
Jim Kilfoyle’s men maintained their charge for promotion with seven tries and a second-half shut-out of their high-flying neighbours.
The breathless first period was keenly-contested but the hosts were punished for loose kicking and handling errors as Chester took a 28-24 advantage into the interval.
But the hosts upped their game on the resumption, disciplined rucking and incisive attacking play forcing a stunned Chester side into submission.
The visitors opened the scoring on five minutes, a loose defensive kick resulting in Sean Green’s try and Lloyd Hayes’s conversion.
A period of Sandal pressure was rewarded by a try and conversion from skipper Greg Wood that levelled the scores six minutes later but another poor kick from the hosts gifted Chester a converted score within two minutes.
Back came Sandal again, Jonny Gatus driven over by his pack for an unconverted try before Mark Pease followed up on Wood’s break to edge his team 17-14 ahead.
The lead was short-lived, Chester’s Rhys Hayes pouncing on a charged-down kick to touch-down and Hayes added the goal.
Only a quarter of the game had been played but the points kept on coming and Simon Frewin’s try, improved by Wood, restored Sandal’s lead before a dropped ball in attack resulted in Chester’s Tom Evans sprinting 80 yards to score.
Hayes’s conversion gave the visitors the advantage going into the second half but it was one-way traffic from then on.
Two Wood penalties edged the hosts ahead and, driven on by their insatiable pack, Sandal strolled to the bonus-point victory with converted tries from Austen Thompson, James Stewart and Pease.
