Sheffield Wednesday defender Wood secures loan move to Coventry City

COVENTRY City have signed Wakefield-born defender Richard Wood on loan from Sheffield Wednesday in a deal that could lead to a permanent move to the Owls' Championship rivals.

The 24-year-old's loan will expire in January but he is expected to put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the Ricoh Arena in the new year.

Former Ossett School student Wood was put on the transfer list at Hillsborough after he rejected the offer of an extension to his contract which runs out at the end of this season.

Wood, who played for Ossett Town at junior level, was also linked with Notts County, Sheffield United and Ipswich Town but a permanent move to Coventry will return a transfer fee for the Owls and avoid Woods leaving for nothing in the summer.

Wednesday manager Brian Laws has indicated that he will use the freed-up budget to strengthen his squad before Christmas.

Wood has made more than 170 appearances for Wednesday since progressing through the Hillsborough youth ranks, and has also been team captain.

His younger brother, Nick, is also on the books at the Championship club, but is yet to break into the first team.
