DESPITE boasting the majority of second-half possession and territory, Wakefield Trinity Wildcats lost 22-10 to Hull KR in their first home game of the Stobart Super League XVII season.

Rovers enjoyed the better of the opening quarter-hour and opened the scoring after six minutes when Mickey Paea touched-down, skipper Michael Dobson adding the conversion to go 6-0 up.

The Wildcats struggled to get into the game but a rare raid into Rovers’ territory on 16 minutes ended with Ben Cockayne crossing in the corner following a fine slip pass from Oliver Wilkes and a darting run from Isaac John, who failed with the conversion.

Hull responded five minutes later when Dobson’s cross-field kick was pounced-on by Con Mika and he touched-down for a score improved by Dobson.

The final say of a closely-contested first-half went to the hosts however and Tim Smith’s clever pass sent Andy Raleigh bulldozing over. John goaled to make it 10-12 at the break.

The second period started in the same fashion with little between the teams but the sin-binning of Scott Taylor gave Wakefield added impetus.

Richard Agar’s men pushed forward and Frankie Mariano should have scored on 57 minutes but he dropped Dean Collis’s pass with the tryline beckoning.

The mistake was punished two minutes later when Rovers’ first meaningful attack of the half ended with Josh Hodgson crashing over.

Wakefield charged forward again but despite repeated sets inside Hull territory, the visitors’ superb defence held firm.

As Trinity ran out of ideas, Hull broke forward and Rhys Lovegrove’s try and Craig Hall’s conversion killed off the game to make it 22-10 at the hooter.
