Stadium action group posts new protest strategy

STADIUM Wakefield Action Group (SWAG) has come up with a new way to target Wakefield council chiefs.

As well as the planned protest outside Wakefield Town Hall on Tuesday morning against the local authority's decision to pull on the plug on the Thornes Park stadium development, SWAG will be handing out postcards.

SWAG see this as a key element of their overall strategy. The postcards are addressed to chief executive officer Joanne Roney.

"WMDC are to discuss papers on Tuesday which we fear will include the removal of all funding for all of the Rugby League clubs in the district," said SWAG spokesman Phil Townsend.

"This would be in complete contradiction of their own proposals to develop a Community Sports Stadium and Sports Village complex in Thornes Park, for which around 70,000 worth of public money has been spent – presumably indicating that there was an intention to build such a facility at some point!"

Protesters are expected to converge on the Town Hall from around 9am and to remain in attendance until the start of the cabinet meeting at 10am.
