Townend out to prove he can mix it over six rounds with Riyaz

BIG-HITTING Wakefield boxer Andy Townend will enter the ring for his first six-round bout at Doncaster Dome tomorrow, Saturday.

Townend, from Portobello, has shone in his first four professional fights over three rounds and will be out to prove he can cut it at twice the distance against Ibrar Riyaz at the Dome.

The 23-year-old lightweight eased to victory over Ross Payne last time out - a win that was enough to see trainer and promoter Stefy Bull give him a shot at six rounds.

And the former Kettlethorpe High School pupil can’t wait to get in the ring.

“It’s been a bit of a chilled out week this week and I’m excited to get in that ring,” he said.

“The week before was tough in training but I’m ready for six rounds.”

He added: “I’ve heard he’s a strong kid who likes to come at his opponents but hopefully I can stop him doing that.”

Riyaz, from Reading, has lost 42 of his 45 fights as a pro.

Townend will be on the same bill as Doncaster’s Gavin McDonnell, who also trains at Bull’s Empress Ballroom gym and will fight for the British Masters title against Dudley’s Dean Anderson.

The former White Rose Boxing Club member and England international has been sparring with McDonnell and stablemate Robbie Barrett in the build-up to his bout.

“Andy keeps himself to himself but goes about his boxing in an efficient manner,” said Barrett

“He’s always training hard and he’s ready to go the six round distance.

“You can tell that he’s fired up for a longer fight and I’m glad that I’m not the one facing him!”

Townend will be backed by a bumper following from the Merrie City with over 130 tickets sold.

He would like to thank the Bay Horse in Crigglestone after the pub sold 80 tickets to support him.

Any remaining tickets can be bought by contacting Townend direct on 07857 180576 or on the door at the Dome.

Tickets are priced at £35 and doors open at 6.15pm.
