Wakefield Harrier Amy-Eloise Markovc will go into this evening's women's 3,000m final at the European Athletics Indoor Championships full of confidence after an assured display in the heats.

In the opening night of action in Toruń, Poland, Markovc produced a dominant display in the first heat, staying out of trouble before taking the lead at the bell and powering to the line to claim victory in 8:56.26.

Markovc, who is based in the United States, became the first Harrier in history to set a British record last month when she clocked 9:30.69 in an indoor two-mile in New York.

After last night's race she said: “I tried to stay relaxed especially in my first senior championships and in the prelims it can be tactical so I just tried to take care of business.

"I wanted to stay calm and confident and I trusted my gut that I could get out of trouble. I am really pleased to get to my first senior final and now I really want to do well.”
