Wakefield Harriers' Emily Freeman claims European gold for GB

SPRINT ace Emily Freeman steered Great Britain to a sprint double at the weekend.

Dwain Chambers - who tried out for Cas' Tigers last year - netted the men's 100m crown in Leira, Portugal.

Wakefield Harriers' Freeman meanwhile attended the European Team Championships initially as a member of the 4x100m relay team.

But a late withdrawal from the Aviva Great Britain and NI team meant she was drafted into the 100m sprint.

And Freeman had a fantastic run, winning the event in 11.42 secs that also gained maximum points for the team.

In so doing, Freeman made history by becoming the first female from Britain to win this event.

Freeman later ran a good third leg in the 4x100m relay with the team finishing a creditable second.

The previous weekend Freeman competed in one of the supporting races at the IAAF Golden League meeting in Berlin - and won in a new club record time of 11.33 secs.

She is now top of the early-season UK rankings and has moved up to 21st in the UK 100m all-time list.
