Wakefield Wildcats skipper Danny Kirmond set for up to four weeks on sidelines with knee injury

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have received a blow with the news captain Danny Kirmond will be sidelined for up to four weeks with a knee injury.

The 27-year-old suffered the injury before half-time in Wakefield’s Super League loss against Huddersfield Giants at the weekend and had an operation today.

Kirmond is definitely out of this weekend’s trip to France to take on Catalans Dragons and is expected to miss matches against Salford City Reds, St Helens and Leeds Rhinos next month.

“Danny Kirmond’s having an operation on a cartilage today, it’s going to rule him out for three to four weeks,” said Wildcats head coach Richard Agar.

“It’s a big blow because he’s been a very good presence for us, he’s got that line-breaking ability and he’s really grown in stature into the captaincy.

“We’ve not got the biggest squad and we had a good run second half of last year where we didn’t get much [injuries].

“It’s part and parcel of the game and we’ll just try and manage it as best we can and hopefully it’s only a three to four week job and we’ll get him back in good time. It’s a blow because he’s a very important player for us.”

Kirmond’s setback has resulted in Agar calling Kyle Trout back from his dual registration spell with Doncaster. Trout and Frankie Mariano will both be in contention for spots in Wakefield’s squad for the trip to France.

Centre Reece Lyne will also miss out this weekend owing to a pectoral injury but the injury is not as bad as first feared.

“We were a little bit worried about Reece Lyne, we thought he’d got a torn pec which at one point we thought we may be looking at surgery which would keep him out for six months,” Agar said.

“The specialist is very happy that it’s started to heal itself already and we’ll probably expect a two to three week lay-off for Reece which is better news than we first feared, but it’s still a blow for the kid because he’d certainly anchored his place in the team on playing very well.”
