Wakefield Harrier Thomas targets Steel City triumph

WAKEFIELD Harrier Charlene Thomas will look to heighten her Olympic prospects at the UKA Aviva Indoor UK Trials and Championships in Sheffield today.

Thomas, 29, will compete in the 1500m at the English Institute of Sport in the Steel City against a top-class field from across Britain and Ireland.

And, with less than 12 months to go until the start of the London Olympics, the distance runner will be looking to build on an encouraging start to 2012.

Thomas returned from altitude training in Kenya by competing for Team GB in the Aviva International Meeting in Glasgow at the end of last month.

Taking on top 1500m runners from Germany, Russia and the United States, Thomas ran well to finish fourth, two places behind World Championship silver medallist Hannah England.

Her finish helped the British and Northern Irish side to victory and a superb start to the Olympic year.

And Thomas, the 2011 European Team Championships 1500m gold medallist, will eye a continuation of that form in Sheffield as athletes start to up their gear with Olympic selection edging closer.

The championships will be screened live on Channel 4 from 2pm today.
