Wakefield marksman Oli Johnson has left York City following a “nightmare year” at the club.
The 25 year-old, whose contract was due to expire in the summer, left the club by mutual consent shortly before the sacking of manager Gary Mills last weekend.
Johnson signed for York in June but his time with the Minstermen was dogged by stomach and groin injuries and he started only one game under Mills.
The former Nostell MW forward is now receiving treatment in Lilleshall as part of the PFA’s sports rehabilitation programme and is determined to put his injury woes behind him. Johnson said: “It is a relief to get away from York.
“It has been a nightmare year and I never got going. I have had injury problems all season and although I had an operation last December, the injuries came back and the pain got worse.
“I played through the pain barrier but I couldn’t do myself justice and it probably made things worse to try and play instead of getting it sorted.
“[Mills] wanted to send me out on loan to get match fitness but I knew that leaving was the best thing for me and the club.”
Johnson added: “I have to be realistic and my aim is to get fit and get back to enjoying my football again.
“I am not thinking about moving to another club yet. I will look at the situation again at the start of next season.”
The former Nostell MW forward enjoyed a meteoric rise into league football, signing for Stockport County in 2008 before joining Norwich City two years later.
A loan spell at Yeovil Town was followed by a move to Oxford in January 2012 but he was released at the end of last season.
