WAKEFIELD windsurfing team the Pugneys Pirates will look to build on their regional success when they represent the RYA North Zone at this weekend’s national final of the Team15 Champions Cup.
Pugneys were crowned Team15 North Zone champions on their home waters to book their place in the national finals, which take place at Northampton Sailing Club this weekend.
They’ll now go sail-to-sail with over 100 young windsurfers from around the country in a bid to be crowned national champions.
The competitors, all under 16 years of age, will compete in four different windsurfing classes, (3.5m, 4.5m, 5.8m, Techno 6.8) pitting their skills against each other, trying to post the best results possible for their team over two days.
The RYA North Zone has a great record in the T15 Champions Cup with two national championships going to the North Lincs and Humberside “North Lincs Invaders” in 2009 and 2010. This year the Pugneys Pirates will be battling it out to make sure that it is three in a row for the Yorkshire and Humberside Region.
RYA National Windsurfing Development Officer Gillian Wright who organises the competition says: “We are very excited about the Team15 Champions Cup this year, it’s always a fantastic weekend with a fun yet competitive atmosphere.
“For many youngsters and parents this will be their first taste of competing at a national regatta. With changes to the zones this year, new teams and plenty of new faces it will be really exciting to see which windsurfing team will be crown the champions”.
