Wakefield Trinity Wildcats skipper Danny Kirmond admits that news of head coach Brian Smith’s resignation was a shock for the club’s players.

Trinity confirmed that Smith had stepped-down from his role this afternoon, Tuesday, and Kirmond told the Wakefield Express: “It was a shock for us [the players].

“Brian told us that his decision was due to personal reasons and nothing to do with us, as players.

“He didn’t go into any detail but we have to respect his decision.”

Kirmond added: “This is professional sport and these things happen.

“Brian is a great coach. We learned from him and he did a lot to keep us in Super League last year.

“You build relationships with coaches and staff but we have to move on quickly and it’s now up to us [the players] to work hard and focus on St Helens on Friday.

“There is no doom and gloom. I am sure [Smith’s replacement] will be the right guy for the job.”

Kirmond also revealed that he is recovering well from a neck injury and hopes to be back in action in “a couple of weeks”.
