Three more wins should be enough to seal a place in the First Utility Super League Super 8s, according to Wakefield Trinity Wildcats coach Chris Chester.
Yesterday’s 25-24 victory over Catalans Dragons at the Magic Weekend in Newcastle was Wakefield’s ninth in 10 games since Chester took charge.
Trinity were bottom of the table before Easter, but have climbed to sixth and are just four points outside the top-four.
They hit back from 14-0 down yesterday and sealed a famous win when Jacob Miller landed a long-range drop goal with two minutes remaining.
Wakefield finished 11 points adrift at the bottom of the table when the competition split after 23 rounds last year and securing a place in the top-eight would be a massive achievement.
Chester insisted: “What we want to do as a group primarily is we want to consolidate our place in the eight.
“We’re not getting carried away and once we’re in the eight we can look upwards.
“It’s another step in the right direction today. We know there’ll be a rough patch along the way, but we’re enjoying the ride. It’s a great feeling to be producing stuff like this.”
Yesterday’s victory was achieved without suspended duo Scott Moore and Anthony England. Catalans would gave gone top of the table had they won, deposing Warrington Wolves, who Wakefield beat a week ago.
The French team scored five tries to Wakefield’s four, but Pat Richards missed four of his six shots at goal, while Liam Finn had a 100 per cent record.
Of Miller’s one-pointer, Chester said: “I thought he had no chance, to be honest, but I am pleased he got it through the posts.
“It shows the confidence of Milky [Miller] at the minute. He’s enjoying his rugby and I thought he was superb again for us.”
Trinity battled back to lead in the third quarter, but went six points behind with 20 minutes left.
“I’m really delighted we came back, not just once, but twice,” Chester added. “That shows the belief in the group and the spirit we’ve got. We found a way to win the game in the end. A draw was a fair result in all fairness, but I’ll take this every single day of the week.”
