Wakefield Trinity Wildcats are set to unveil their first signing for 2014 next week in the shape of South Sydney Rabbitohs youngster Dan Smith.
The 20-year-old front-rower has spent a year with the Rabbitohs’ under-20s squad after coming through the Leeds Rhinos youth set-up and is set to pen a two-year deal at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.
Smith’s recruitment comes on the back of a trip Down Under by Wildcats head coach Richard Agar, who has been charged with building a competitive team for 2014 on a reduced budget.
And Agar believes the former Castleford Lock Lane youngster fits the bill, with England Academy honours and a place in Rhinos U20s’ Grand Final squad courting attention from Down Under.
Smith has made 24 appearances for the Rabbitohs U20s this season, chipping in with four tries.
And Agar has been impressed by the youngster, making him his first squad addition for next season.
