A YOUTHFUL Wakefield Wildcats team defeated Co-operative Championship side Sheffield Eagles 38-24 at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium on Friday night.
Wildcats fans got their first glimpse of Wakefield’s new-look team for 2012 but it was very much the club’s stars of the future that shone against an Eagles side without six regular first team players owing to suspensions being served from last season’s Grand Final against Featherstone Rovers.
Matt Wildie shone with a brace of tries for Wakefield, who had Glenn Morrison in charge, while James Davey, Sam Fletcher, Frankie Mariano, Matt James and Kyle Trout also got on the try-scoring sheet for the hosts.
Gareth Moore kicked four of his six conversions while Danny Ansell also successfully converted.
Wildcats: Kay, Morton, Walshaw, Cowling, Fletcher, Ansell, Wildie, James, Davey, Spiers, Slater, Mariano, Trout. Replacements: Annakin, Wright, Lillycrop, Gledhill, Moore, Hardcastle.
Eagles: Turner, Bergin, Morrison, Straughier, Finigan, Brambani, Brown, Hepworth, Henderson, Howieson, Szostak, Green, Knowles. Replacements: Higgins, Rowe, Battye, Hanson, Scott, Straughn, Smith, Hawksworth.
