SHARLSTON Rovers coach Gordy Long praised his side after they lifted the Hamuel Reichenbacher Yorkshire Cup by beating fellow Pennine League outfit Nevison Leap 24-10 at Featherstone’s Big Fellas Stadium on Saturday.
Rovers came out on top in heavy conditions with tries from Gareth Davies, Scott Glassell, Sean Emblem and Adam Saynor plus four goals by Ian Jackson.
Sharlston were only 6-4 ahead up half-time and 12-10 up with 10 minutes left but produced a storming finish to see off gallant opponents in an enthralling contest
“We are an amateur club run on professional lines and this is reward for the effort the players have put in. They trained on Boxing Day,” said Long.
“I am very proud of our players and especially their second-half display. I was impressed with all the side. We had to dig deep in the first-half when we were down to 12 men after having a player sin-binned.
“I wasn’t surprised how strongly Nevison came at us. It was always going to be a forward battle in the conditions.”
