TALENTED tumblers from Wakefield Gym Club continued to show why they’re amongst the best in the business at the European Tumbling Championships in Russia.
The Thornes Park Athletics club was represented throughout the Great Britain team in St Petersburg and many returned with medals to show for their superb efforts.
The Merrie City welcomed home a new European champion in Rachel Letsche, who took top honours in the individual senior women’s section.
Letsche took top spot in her first routine and never looked back.
Wakefield team-mate Zara Mclean also competed in the senior women’s section and finished an impressive fourth, missing out on a bronze medal by the slimmest of margins.
Both were part of an all-Wakefield Great Britain senior women side who pushed hosts Russia all the way before eventually finishing a respectable second overall.
Samantha Rockett was also a key part of the team’s charge to silver.
One of the Wakefield club’s junior talents also returned with a gold medal.
Ashleigh Long, 14, was in incredible form in the women’s under-18 section to help the British team to the European Junior Team title.
Long was faultless in the preliminary round to help secure Great Britain a place in the finals.
And she excelled again in the finals, helping her team beat the cream of the tumbling talent from across the continent to secure a gold for Britain.
Her success continues a long line of Wakefield tumblers who’ve helped Britain claim the junior team title in 2004, ‘06, ‘08 and ‘10.
In the junior men’s section Matthew Weightman competed for Great Britain for the very first time.
He narrowly missed out on an individual and team final, but the top tumbler enjoyed a great experience in Russia and will be confident of more success in the future.
One of the Wakefield tumblers in action in Russia has received a further boost with the news that she’ll be part of Cirque du Soleil in Canada.
Zara McLean will travel across the pond to perform with the world-famous entertainment company.
Wakefield Gym Club has seen no fewer than 12 of its former senior performers taken on by Cirque du Soleil at shows all over the world.
Auditions were also held at the club earlier this year.
