WAKEFIELD Harrier Charlene Thomas excelled at the European Team Championships to claim an unexpected victory in the 1500m and help Great Britain to fourth place overall.

The 29-year-old produced the third fastest time of her career over the distance with 4 min 06.85 sec to beat a top-class field in Stockholm yesterday.

The Harrier, who was predicted a fourth-placed finish ahead of the event, kept pace with the leading pack throughout and was well positioned midway through the final lap.

She burst through the leading pack - including top names such as Yekaterina Martynova, Anna Mischenko and Natallia Kareiva - on the home straight to claim a memorable victory.

It sparked wild celebrations from Thomas, who will now be hoping to be included in more top-end events thanks to her success in Stockholm.

It was the highlight of a rain-soaked final day of the championships for Britain, who won two events on Sunday thanks to Andy Turner’s success in the 110m hurdles.
