WAKEFIELD high jump star Martyn Bernard has been named in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad for the forthcoming IAAF World Championships.

The former Outwood Grange pupil will join Tom Parsons as the two high jumpers pulling on the red, white and blue in Daegu in South Korea.

Bernard finished second on countback in the UK Trials in Birmingham but failed to match the A qualifying height of 2.31m, which would have seen him automatically selected for the championships, when he jumped 2.28m.

He also failed to reach the A qualifying height at the London Diamond League meeting at Crystal Palace at the weekend, finishing eighth with 2.25m.

It meant the Wakefield Harrier had to rely on being selected as one of two high jumpers to make the plane for Korea.

He’s made the grade, and he’ll be looking for an impressive performance at the World Championships, which start on Saturday, August 27.
