WAKEFIELD Thornes openers Richard Foster and Nadeera Nawela set a new all-time Central Yorkshire League (CYL) record with their mammoth first wicket partnership of 320 at Premier Division rivals Townville on Saturday.

Skipper Foster hit 24 fours and six sixes in his 174 while Sri Lankan Nawela bagged 18 boundaries and seven sixes on his way to 164.

Their alliance lasted 43.4 overs and two-and-three-quarter hours and beat the previous record of 281 set three years ago by Methley’s Nick Connolly (101 not out) and Alex Twigg (144 not out) against East Ardsley.

Thornes’ final total of 378-3 is the sixth highest first XI score in CYL history and the second highest in the top flight.

The huge score failed to deter Townville, who battled bravely to 301 in reply but went down by 77 runs.

However, the Thornes pairing heaped more misery on their Townville rivals only 24 hours later when they hit a combined 110 to secure victory in their Jack Hampshire Trophy semi-final.

Nawela celebrated another ton, hitting 124 from 86 balls, while Foster contributed 51 to Thornes’ score of 216.

Townville were then dispatched for 107 as Thornes set-up a final showdown with Wrenthorpe, who defeated Birstall in the other semi-final.
