Agar: Still plenty to play for in Batley Bulldogs friendly

THERE are still places up for grabs in Wakefield Wildcats’ squad for their season opener at Widnes Vikings, according to head coach Richard Agar.

The Cats boss has revealed that his line-up for next Friday’s clash at the Stobart Stadium is “not a million miles off” being finalised.

But there are still “one or two” spots up for grabs and he’ll use Sunday’s final trial game at Batley Bulldogs (kick-off 2pm) to help solve his selection headache.

“There’s incentive enough for those playing at the weekend to do well,” said Agar.

“We have some guys who want to be in the 17 at Widnes that are short of game time. Players like Oli Wilkes need some time on the pitch under their belt to see if they’re ready for Widnes.”

“We’ve got guys playing for different reasons and it’ll mainly be a full-time squad.”

Former Widnes man Wilkes has been recovering from having his appendix removed.

Frankie Mariano is the only major doubt for Sunday with a toe injury and Agar will assess the back-rower in training before fielding him at Mount Pleasant.

Agar commented: “If he [Mariano] doesn’t play I don’t think he’ll be going to Widnes.”

Kyle Amor, Andy Ellis and Kyle Wood are also included in Agar’s squad as they look to secure first-team places.

“I don’t think it’s going to benefit those players to have a week off,” Agar commented.

Wildcats: Tony, Fletcher, Cowling, Walshaw, Morton, Wildie, Wood, Wilkes, Ellis, Amor, Mariano, Slater, Trout. Subs: James, Davey, Kay, Spiers, Lillycrop, Gledhill, Annakin.
