Countdown to Super League XVII: Washbrook targets flying start for Wildcats

DANNY Washbrook is hopeful Wakefield Trinity Wildcats can make a flying start to Super League XVII at Widnes Vikings tonight (Friday).

The loose-forward, who arrived at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium following seven years with Hull FC, is mindful that it may take time for the new-look Wakefield squad to fully hit top gear after wholesale close-season changes.

But he’s hoping a good pre-season will help them kick-off the 2012 campaign with their first two points at the Stobart Stadium.

“Hopefully we’ll hit the ground running but you never know how things are going to go,” said Washbrook.

“We’re a new team but it’s been going well in training and hopefully once we get on the pitch we can get going straight away.

“If it does take two or three weeks then that might be the case but we’re hoping it’s going to start right from Round 1.”

The 26-year-old is well aware of the tough task that lies in wait against a Vikings side that has undergone similar big changes to its squad.

“They’re the same as us in that they’re quite a new squad," he said.

“They’re going to want to make an impression coming up from the Championship so we need to make sure we’re ready for it.”

Washbrook played under Wildcats head coach Richard Agar during their time together with the Black and Whites.

He’s confident he’ll do a good job in charge of Wakefield but insists no targets have been set with regards to a final position in Super League.

He said: “I know what a quality coach Rich is and the things he looks to do for the club so it’ll be good.

“We haven’t spoken about targets, we’re taking it week by week and looking forward to Widnes.”
