Sorry Reds no match for clinical Wildcats

Wakefield Wildcats 36 Salford City Reds 6 RED-HOT Wakefield Wildcats ran in seven tries to extinguish the modest threat posed by visitors Salford at Belle Vue on Sunday.

Reds invited Wakefield to take charge in the first half, giving away needless penalties and really not getting to grips with the game at all early on.

In contrast, Wakefield were ultra-clinical in their approach. Virtually every set was completed and every tackle made.

It wasn't particularly exciting to watch, but it was effective.

And after the previous home game that went Huddersfield's way by 50-plus unanswered points, Wildcats' priority this time around was simply to win - and win convincingly.

Wakefield were successful on both counts.

Another huge success story from Sunday was the contribution of man of the match Sam Obst.

He stepped into the scrum-half role after Danny Brough was left out of John Kear's starting 17.

Kear claimed afterwards that the best available 17 players to beat Salford were on the pitch. Victory would seem to bear him out.

It was one-way traffic in the first half with Wildcats scoring five unanswered tries through Daryl Millard, Tevita Leo-Latu, Glenn Morrison (a strong contender for man of the match himself), Dale Ferguson and Aaron Murphy (who put in another solid display).

Obst converted four of the five tries but had no luck with the wider-out efforts after the break after Obst himself and Damien Blanch had added to the try tally.

Salford raised their game after Obst's 43rd minute touchdown and were rewarded with a fairer share of the ball and a try on 62 minutes, scored by Stuart Littler and goaled by sub' Stefan Ratchford.

Wildcats: Blaymire, Blanch, Gleeson, Millard, Murphy, Demetriou, Obst, Tronc, Leo-Latu, Moore, Ferguson, Henderson, Morrison. Subs: Korkidas, Cooke, Davey, Gledhill.

Tries: Littler (62).

Goals: Ratchford 1 from 1.
