Wakefield Trinity Wildcats announce Oxford Rugby League partnership
WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats have announced a partnership with Championship One new boys Oxford Rugby League club.
The link-up will focus on player development pathways and see Oxford use partnerships with Oxford University and Oxford Brookes University to find future rugby league administrators.
Oxford are one of three new clubs confirmed to enter the competition in 2013 following restructuring and Wildcats are pleased to support their growth.
“We’re delighted to go into partnership with Oxford and are sure it’ll be a successful link-up for both clubs,” said Wildcats chief executive James Elston.
“As a club they have some very experienced people working there who have the expertise to make a great success of rugby league in Oxfordshire and we’re happy to be able to add our support to that.”
Former St Helens chief executive Tony Colquitt forms part of Oxford’s experienced board of directors, as well as former Bradford Bulls and Hull FC player Tevita Vaikona and Professor Simon Lee, ex-vice chancellor of Leeds Carnegie and a graduate at Oxford University.
“It makes a lot of sense for us to partner up with the Wildcats,” said Colquitt.
“They are a club making great strides and it’s a big positive for us to have them working closely with us.
“There are lots of opportunities for us to make a real success of rugby league not just in Oxford itself, but across the county of Oxfordshire.
“I think there’s a fantastic opportunity to link up with the educational establishments in Oxford with current students and alumni for the future generations of rugby league players and administrators, and that will very much be an area that we’re focussing on.”
Last year Wildcats had announced a link-up with a newly-formed Northampton who were set to enter Championship One but the team, known as the Rebels, announced their withdrawal from the competition in August with chairman David Cardoza revealing the concept had “no chance of success”.
The link-up with Oxford is set to be one of two partnerships Wakefield announce before the start of next season.
