Wakefield Wildcats joined by Nigeria African Cup of Nations squad at Portugal training camp
WAKEFIELD Trinity Wildcats are sharing their pre-season training base in Portugal with Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations squad.
Richard Agar and his men jetted off to Browns Training Camp in Vilamoura, near Faro, on Saturday for a week-long warm weather camp ahead of the forthcoming Super League season.
And they are in good company, with Nigeria also using the renowned sports training facility to prepare for the African Cup of Nations, which takes place in South Africa from Saturday, January 19 until Sunday, February 10.
Wildcats players have been rubbing shoulders with star names such as Chelsea stars John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses, both part of Nigeria’s initial squad for the competition, during their stay.
The week-long camp will be no holiday for the Wakefield players, however, with Agar, who used the base during his time as Hull FC coach, upping the training intensity with less than a month to go before the start of the campaign.
Kyle Wood (eye) and Lucas Walshaw (ribs) are the only senior players to miss the trip, although their absence has allowed under-19s prospect Brad Day the chance to join the first team squad.
Oliver Wilkes, Lee Smith, Kyle Amor and Andy Raleigh have all travelled despite missing the Boxing Day game at Leeds Rhinos.
