Wakefield Wildcats to unveil new signing by end of May

WAKEFIELD Wildcats' boss John Kear is hopeful that he will unveil a new signing by the end of May.

Following the departure from the club of prop-forward Shane Tronc, Kear has been quick to sign a replacement and he has revealed that the deal is all-but complete.

Kear said: "We have a definite replacement and the player has signed a contract. I am hopeful that the work permit will go through and he will arrive before the Harlequins game (on May 23]. At worst, it may not go through until the round 16 game at Leeds (on June 4]."

Kear would not reveal the identity of the player involved but former Wildcats prop-forward James Stosic, who left the Hearwell Stadium last November, has been tipped for a return to Wakefield.

Stosic's stint at the Wildcats came to an end after he was unable to secure a Macedonian passport that would have qualified him for non-quota status at the club.

Meanwhile, Kear has ruled out a raid on troubled NRL club Melbourne Storm who have been punished for breaching salary cap restrictions.

Storm have been stripped of two NRL titles, three minor premierships, fined $500,000 and ordered to repay $1.1million in prize money after the club was found to have breached the salary cap by $1.7million over the past five years.

The scandal means that Storm must ensure they are under the cap in order to accrue points next season and the future of high-profile players including Greg Inglis, Cooper Cronk, Brett Finch, Cameron Smith and Billy Slater remains unclear.

Kear said: "The players are still under contract at Melbourne and there is no way we could match what they are on now.

"We are trying to run (the Wildcats] as a going concern and not spend money we haven't got. But if a sponsor wants to pay for Cooper Cronk to join us then I would be a very happy man!"
