Wakefield Wildcats defeat Super League rivals Castleford Tigers

A STRONG second-half performance propelled the Wakefield Wildcats to a 19-6 Super League XV victory over local rivals Castleford Tigers.

The hosts racked-up 13 unanswered points after the break to earn bragging rights and bag their sixth victory of the season.

The first half proved to be a little disappointing as both sides struggled to hold on to the ball and the greasy conditions contributed to numerous handling errors.

The Wildcats broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when a rare break forward put John Kear's men in sight of the try-line.

Glenn Morrison's off-load caught the Tigers' defence on the back foot and Sam Obst scurried over from 10 yards for a try converted by Paul Cooke.

The lead lasted only seven minutes however and the Tigers hit back when Brent Sherwin's cross-field kick was fumbled by Dale Morton and winger Jordan Thompson pounced on the loose ball to touch down.

The try, converted by Joe Westerman, levelled the scores and sparked a second quarter that was dominated by the visitors but without an end result.

The Tigers' failure to make their possession and territorial advantage count was punished by the Wildcats in the second half and the hosts were back in front five minutes after the break.

A penalty gifted Wakefield dangerous field position and good hands from Cooke and Daryl Millard along the line sent Morton over in the corner.

Wakefield maintained the momentum and four minutes later another dangerous set ended with Ben Jeffries' cross-field kick finding Tevita Leo-Latu for a simple score and Cooke added the extras.

Castleford were unable to stage a response and Cooke extended the lead with a 65th minute penalty before he landed a drop goal 10 minutes from time to wrap up the points.
