Wildcats close in Academy Championship crown after crushing defeat of St Helens

WILDCATS Academy notched a near-perfect ten - on two counts - against St Helens at Belle Vue on Saturday.

The side scorched to their tenth straight win in the Academy Championship to cement their place at the top of the table.

And they did it by scoring ten tries against Saints.

With only four games remaining, the conclusion of the campaign rests firmly in their own hands.

Wildcats opened their account after only five minutes of an otherwise fairly evenly contested first half, Joel Gibson touching down in the corner.

Twenty minutes later Matty Wildie kicked to the corner for Gibson to pick up his second try.

Saints hit back just after the half-hour with an unconverted try to keep them in contention up to half-time.

But St Helens became, essentially, spectators in the second half as Wildcats unleashed their full array of rugby league skills.

Three minutes in Dale Morton crossed. Five minutes later St Helens cancelled out the score.

But two tries in reply from Cain Southernwood and Jordan Grayston took Wildcats beyond Saints' reach.

St Helens did manage to cut the gap to ten points, but 'ten' was the magic number of the day, of course, and from this point on Wildcats let rip in the final quarter to win comfortably -

Southernwood, Grayston and Wildie all adding to the try tally before the final whistle.

Wildcats: Will Colleran, Joel Gibson, Lucas Walshaw, Danny Cowling, Dale Morton, Cain Southernwood, Matt Wildie, Russ Spiers, Luke Adamson, Adam Slater, George Griffin, Kyle Trout, Chris Annekin. Replacements: Luke Pettman, Tom Harrington, Jordan Grayston, Tom Henderson.
