Wildcats pipped by Reds

Wildcats U20s 16 Salford City Reds 20 WAKEFIELD Wildcats were pipped for the Academy U20 Championship points at a rain-lashed Hearwell Stadium on Saturday.

The pitch at Belle Vue had looked an absolute picture in the spring sunshine on Friday. By close of play Saturday it had been roughed up significantly. (Credit to groundsman Steve Dutton for keeping it in such excellent shape; it was perfectly playable for Wakefield's Super League clash with the Reds the following day).

Salford edged the first half with a converted try, and had to continue to work hard throughout the second half to secure points that edged them into third place in the league ladder. Wakefield have slipped to fourth-bottom with just one win from four outings.

Centre Danny Lawton (2) and loose-forward Chris Annekin scored the tries for the Wildcats with Cain Southernwood landing a couple of conversions.

Wildcats: Will Colleran, Lee Brickwood, Danny Lawton, Karl Olstrom, Yaad Johal, Jordan Lowther, Matthew Wildie, Paul King, Lloyd Templeton, Kyle Trout, Adam Slater, Sam Scott, Chris Annekin. Subs: Luke Pettman, Tom Harrington, Lucas Walshaw, Cain Southernwood.
