Wildcats pipped by Saints
St Helens 22 Wildcats 16 WILDCATS underlined their play-off potential despite going down to one of the Grand Final favourites on Friday night.
The three wins Wakefield had got under their belts going into this clash stood them in good stead.
And Wildcats' new-found defensive resolve put them in the driving seat early on. Handling errors, however, played into St Helens' hands.
Tries from Dale Morton - who is establishing himself as a Super League regular - and Daryl Millard put the visitors in front. Glenn Morrison also had a try chalked off following Danny Brough's astute kick-through.
But Jonny Lomax cut the gap before half-time with a try, goaled by Kyle Eastmond to leave Saints trailing 12-6 at the break.
Veteran hooker Kieron Cunningham overcame the recent death of his mother to score a try on his 500th career appearance after the break, and Francis Meli also touched down to seemingly put Saints in the driving seat.
Wildcats lost their way slightly in the second half when playmaker Danny Brough left the field with a head injury, but Millard bagged his second try of the match to set up a nail-biting finish.
Saints tries: Lomax, Eastmond, Cunningham, Meli. Goals: Eastmond 3
Wakefield tries: Morton, Millard 2. Goals: Brough 2
