Wildcats Academy aces go top of table
WILDCATS Academy went top of the Championship table at the weekend on the back of their ninth straight league win.
Gillette Academy Championship hosts St Helens were swept aside 32-14. Wildcats are now two points clear at the top of the table with five games remaining.
Wildcats Reserves meanwhile went down 36-16 in a scrappy encounter with Leeds Rhinos at the Hearwell Stadium.
Wakefield dominated first-half possession and territory but scored just one try through Aaron Murphy.
Wildcats suffered a blow when first-teamer Frank Winterstein was forced out of the action with a suspected broken jaw.
Leeds then turned the screw to lead 24-6 by half-time.
After condeding another try, Wildcats rallied and scored tries through Antonio Greer and Murphy.
But Leeds had the last word with the final try of the match.
Result and the injury to Winterstein aside, there were plus points for head coach John Kear with both Murphy and Jay Pitts playing a full 80 minutes and Kevin Henderson getting a good hour's work under his belt.
Next Saturday, Wildcats Reserves travel to St Helens, with Saints' Academy grade making the reverse trip to the Hearwell Stadium.
