Wildcats stage sensational second-half fightback to defeat Rovers

Hull KR 18 Wakefield Wildcats 31 WILDCATS delivered a super show befitting Super League at Craven Park after the previous week's disaster against the Giants.

It wasn't all plain sailing though, and coach John Kear knows he still has work to do to keep the conisistency levels up.

Wildcats trailed 18-6 at half-time and looked shaky through much of the first half.

The right-side defence was again vulnerable to rapier-like attacks, but the left side went little better against a Rovers outfit that - rather uncannily - won the same fixture last season 31-18.

Liam Colbon crossed on four minutes to send jitters through the ranks of the travelling support.

But when Shane Tronc steamrollered his way over off Danny Brough's short ball it seemed as if Wakefield were back in contention.

Rovers, however, turned the screw. Jake Webster got over on 19 minutes and Scott Murrell benefited from a fortuitous ricochet for his try five minutes later.

Dobson converted two and landed a penalty on 40 minutes after Brough had scrambled back to help halt a break by Welham, but referee James Child - who had a good game overall - adjudged 'professional foul' and waved the yellow card.

18-6 down and down to 12 men. Wakefield could very easily have given up the ghost.

But man of the match Sam Obst took the responsibility on his sturdy shoulders and turned the game on its head as a result.

He ducked and dived to score a try on 45 minutes then kicked through for full-back Matt Blaymire to touchdown by the uprights.

Two conversions from Obst and the scores were level.

But Wakefield didn't stop there. Back up to their full contingent and just after the hour Daryl Millard scored Wakefield's fourth try, converted by Brough.

And on 66 minutes Blaymire put over his first-ever career drop-goal to make life that much more difficult for Rovers.

Eight minutes from time Tronc was given the benefit of the doubt in terms of grounding by video ref' Ben Thaler - the first time he'd been called upon all night - and it was 'game over'.

Brough converted to wrap up an outstanding 40 minutes of rugby league for Wakefield who, of course, also 'nilled' the opposition in that remarkable second half.
