TEARS fell for a hero who meant so much to so many when the funeral of Lance Cpl David Kirkness took place today (TUESDAY).
Hundreds of people gathered inside and outside Wakefield Cathedral for the service this morning.
The 24-year-old died alongside Rifleman James Brown, 18, saving a crowded Afghanistan market place from two suicide bombers in December.
At the service his 14-year-old brother Christopher was presented with the first Elizabeth Cross to be awarded in West Yorkshire, by the county's Lord Lieutenant , Dr Ingrid Roscoe, as a symbol of the nation's gratitude and respect to Lance Cpl Kirkness and his family.
Giving the address, canon Michael Rawson, sub dean of Wakefield Cathedral spoke of how Lance Cpl Kirkness, of the 3rd Battalion The Rifles, died doing a job he loved, and described him as a man people trusted and admired.
Cpl Kirkness was a former Dane Royd J&I School pupil, and had lived in Hall Green until the age of seven.
After the service, the cortege left for a private service at Wakefield Crematorium to the sound of applause from mourners.
