Boogie wonderland for musical youth

THERE was nothing to blame on the boogie when faultless rehearsals for a 70s spectacular got under way this week.
Wakefield College was transformed into a boogie wonderland as talented kids got practising for Wakefield Youth Music Theatre's (WYMT) production of Boogie Nights, which goes on stage at Theatre Royal Wakefield next month after just two jam-packed weeks of rehearsals.
The musical tells the story of would-be rockstar Roddy O'Neill, whose relationship with girlfriend Debs is at risk of falling apart if his rude and heartless ways continue.
In the starring roles of Roddy and Debs are Jake Mitchell and Laura Pick, who are no strangers after playing love interests opposite each other in the lead roles of WYMT's production of High School Musical last year.
Former Kettlethorpe High School pupil Laura, 16, said: "I'm Jake's girlfriend again – but this time Debs is a lot different. She's bolshy and confident, very different to Gabriella in High School Musical.
"So far rehearsals are going well, there's a great vibe and the good thing about this is that you get to see everyone again."
St Wilfred's School pupil Jake, 15, has been with WYMT for four years. He said: "When you come in on the first day you're really thrown in at the deep end, but you make sure you know all your lines and you're fine.
"This time I'm really excited about getting on stage, I was a lot more nervous with High School Musical."
More than 30 talented youngsters have parts in the disco musical, which features a whole host of 70s classics.
Helping keep them all in step is assistant director and choreographer Zoe Westwood.
She said: "Making sure everyone knows what they are doing in a big scene can be quite challenging but at the same time it's lots of fun. There are lots of new faces this time round and so far it's going really well."
Boogie Nights is at Theatre Royal Wakefield from Wednesday September 3 to Saturday, September 13.
