Do you recognise the vandals?
WAKEFIELD'S first new public square for more than a decade has been hit by vandals – before it has even been officially unveiled.
Crown Court Yard, Tammy Hall Street and Chancery Lane were recently refurbished to transform the square from a car park.
A new central area with a sculpture was created and surrounded by trees, planters, and seating, with improved lighting to make the area safer.
But yobs have ripped up the floral designs and damaged wooden benches and stone planters.
Coun Denise Jeffery, deputy leader of Wakefield Council and portfolio member for regeneration, said: "Having invested in creating the first new public square in Wakefield for many years we are extremely disappointed to find that there is a small minority of people who seek to spoil it for everyone.
"The square includes a beautiful piece of art created by Oliver Barratt and has being created to a very high specification.
"It is intended to act as an example of the excellent quality we are looking for in future developments of public spaces."
Police are appealing for information to the vandal attacks. One took place on Sunday, August 5, when the benches and planters were damaged and the second occurred overnight on Monday, August 13, when shrubs and plants were uprooted.
Sgt Kevin Horn, from the city centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "We are working closely with the council to support the regeneration of the area and we will actively seek to prosecute those responsible."
Anyone with information should contact police on 0845 6060606 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Coun Jeffery added: "As a council we will not tolerate such acts of vandalism.
"Anyone wilfully damaging our public spaces should know we will seek to take the strongest measures against them.
"We are working with the police with the intention of identifying the culprits and pressing criminal charges."
