The five-year-old son of Wakefield Wildcats and Great Britain rugby league player Jamie Rooney has captured the hearts and minds of the people of Wakefield. They have helped raise a staggering £106,000 to send him for the pioneering treatment which may help him walk.
As a one-year-old Brennan was diagnosed with cerebral palsy and is dependent on his mum, Erika Lund, 25, and his dad, Jamie, 27.
And now, thanks to the overwhelming generosity of fundraisers, he is set to start his first block of treatment.
His dad said: "I could thank people every day for what they have done for Brennan and it still wouldn't be enough.
"We can't wait to get him started and are still amazed at the unbelievable response to the appeal.
"We held just one event and then everyone wanted to help – not in my wildest dreams did I think this would happen so quickly.
"At first I wasn't sure about the fundraising but now I know it was the best decision we ever made."
Brennan's treatment will take place at the Euromed Rehabilitation Centre in Poland, where part of the programme includes using specially adapted cosmonaut suits.
Mr Rooney said: "My partner, Erika, and our one-year-old son, Fletcher, will stay with Brennan so it will be tough, but we know that it's the best thing for Brennan's future.
"We hope the treatment will eventually teach him to sit up on his own – that would be amazing and anything more than that would be a bonus."
The Brennan Rooney Fund is releasing a special thank you brochure to all fundraisers and contributors next year.
