A ROYAL guest arrived in Wakefield this afternoon to officially open one of the city’s most successful tourist attractions.

Her Royal Highness the Countess of Wessex unveiled a plaque at the award-winning Hepworth art gallery.

She was greeted by members of the public who presented her with flowers.

Countess Sophie was then taken on a tour of the building by gallery director Simon Wallis and Coun Peter Box, leader of Wakefield Council.

She also met pupils from Greenhill Primary School before taking afternoon tea with guests and supporters of the gallery.

Mr Wallis said: “This is a fabulous way to continue the celebration of the success of the Hepworth and it’s wonderful to welcome Her Royal Highness here.”
