An evening of opera for all

WHETHER you are a big opera fan or you don’t know your Verdi from your Mozart, A Night At The Opera could be for you.

A collection of the best music performed by world class artists will arrive in Wakefield later this month.

London Festival Opera, which has performed in front of the Queen and at the world famous opera house La Fenice in Venice, will include a programme of passion, drama and humour.

Works by Verdi, Puccini, Mozart, Rossini, Bizet and Offenbach will be included in a select chamber ensemble by artists who have appeared with major opera companies including the Royal Opera, English National Opera and Glyndebourne Festival Opera.

One of those looking forward to performing in Yorkshire is artistic director and baritone soloist Philip Blake-Jones from Keighley.

Mr Blake-Jones, 51, said: “This will be an ideal opportunity for opera lovers to experience some of the world’s best opera on their doorstep, as well as being ideal for those who want to go to an opera for the first time.

People still think of opera as elitist, but it is about entertaining. There is a lot of humour and audience participation.

“I think what is really exciting for people who have not been to an opera before is hearing the operatic voice without any microphones. People are in for a real treat.

“This is our first performance in Wakefield, but I am from Yorkshire and am looking forward to bringing opera back to my routes.”

The artists will appear in sumptuous period evening dress as they recreate the atmosphere and grandeur of past times.

A Night At The Opera is at Theatre Royal Wakefield on Tuesday April 12, at 7.30pm.
