Artwalk this way

Local artists and craftspeople will be selling a variety of items, ranging in price from stocking fillers to more expensive items, for those special Christmas gifts, on Wednesday November 30 from 5pm to 9pm.

The Art House is expecting to have a full house of artists and craftspeople selling their wares, and there will also be mulled wine and mince pies to get everyone in the Christmas spirit.

A number of Art House studio holders will also be getting involved with the affordable arts and crafts fair, selling work on the night from their own studio spaces.

This will give the visitors the added bonus of getting to see ‘behind the scenes’ in an artist’s workspace and find out more about their practice.

Anne Cunningham, chief executive of the Art House, said: “This is a great opportunity to get something affordable and distinctive, while supporting local artists.”

It is one of a host of events taking place around the city as part of the Artwalk. Other highlights include a collaboration between Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Best Joined Up, presenting a unique evening of live illustration, music and cinema, with a talk by YSP exhibiting artist Rachel Goodyear at The Hop, from 7.30pm to 11.30pm, with the talk at 8.30pm.

Ackworth Art Group will be exhibiting a series of watercolours and print works at Bevelo picture framers on George Street, while at the Neon Workshops, 12 Months of Neon Love continues, and Richard Sweeney exhibits Folding Neon.

Artwalkers can enjoy demonstrations of Tanglewood guitars at Trad Music, while there’s an exhibition and sale of original artwork, prints and cards by local artists and photographers at Chantry Chapel as part of a special Christmas exhibition by Gallery Arts, and the Hepworth has an evening of nu-folk music (see more below).

Artists Sean and Charlotte Mannion exhibit Lumen at Wakefield Cathedral, while Drew Ward shows Black and White at Jordan’s Solicitors, Woolpacks Yard.

The Orangery will transform into a secret cinema, for Orangery Wednesday, showcasing the best home-grown short films from budding local filmmakers, while Leeds-based arist Oliver Neilson will exhibit in the gallery space, and Chevron, a digital film by Patrick Murphy, will be projected onto The Orangery.

Theatre Royal Wakefield’s Green Room cafe features artwork from Carleton Community High School on the theme Wishes, inspired by the theatre’s panto Aladdin, while Henry’s Bar hosts the Art of Invention and Other Drawings by Mikal B, an intricate, fascinating and funny show giving an insight into a strange parallel world.
