Double award success!

The winner of the £1,200 first prize was singer Luke Murgatroyd. Young Luke from Wyke near Bradford, was recently named the Leeds CIU clubland awards winner, in the category of male vocalist.

I went along to the presentation night, which was held at Harehills WMC in Leeds a few weeks ago and in my view Luke was thoroughly deserving of his award.

My good friend the comedian Stuart Eden was one of the judges on the night in Glass Houghton, and I know that he was very impressed with Luke too.

Unfortunately I was not invited to the event. This was a shame really as I’d have liked to follow a show such as this one, staged in such a smashing club.

However, I chatted to Luke the following day and he told me that the runner-up Jasmine Batty from Normanton did very well in finishing runner-up, while a girl from Manchester by the name of Danielle Hobson came out in third place.

I saw Danielle Hobson recently was I was on the judging panel at the grand final for the Wakefield Starsearch competition at Westgate Common Club in Wakefield and she deserved her victory on that particular night in my view.

My spies tell me that singer Emily Peters was very impressive on her grand final appearance and that she is definitely one for the future.

The remaining finalists were Kayleigh Pearman and Thomas Pywell and, according to my spies, they also gave a good account of themselves too.

I hear that club secretary Shaun Smith, who I had the pleasure of meeting when I last visited this club in my capacity as an entertainer, was in charge of presenting the prizes and the compere for the evening was the ever-reliable Jonathan Carroll.

The real driving force behind this event is sound engineer Steve Paige and I hope to hear that this event continues and runs for another year at Glass Houghton WMC.

I do pop in to this club now and again to see CIU representatives, who have an office in the building and I look forward very much to my next visit.

Sixties Mix were the regular band at Altofts WMC and The Poplar pub in Altofts for many years and the lads are still going strong.

George V WMC in Castleford is set to welcome this nostalgic band this weekend for a Saturday night gig and a great night is assured.

One of my favourites duos Scandal pop up at Girnhill Lane WMC in Featherstone this weekend for a Sunday night out.

Craig and Audrey have the showmanship, the musicianship and the sheer sexiness to succeed in any club venue and I predict a wonderful evening at this busy and successful social club venue.

I bumped into DJ and entrepreneur Tony Sykes in the bank the other day. Tony tells me that he is still presenting the Painthorpe Country Club reunion nights at Crigglestone WMC.

This weekend sees another such party night at Crigg on Friday and the place is sure to be packed to the doors.
