According to Downdetector, which tracks reports of outages of popular sites and networks, more than 4,900 people have reported issues with the network in the last half hour.

Among the issues reported are an inability to make calls, send texts and access the internet, despite devices displaying a full signal.

Devices will still be able to connect to the internet if using a WiFi connection.

Thousands of O2 customers have reported issued with their connection this afternoon.

In a note posted on their coverage checker, O2 said: "We’re aware of an issue.

"Our technical teams are investigating. We apologise for any inconvenience.

"Updates will be shared here as soon they are available."

In 2018, O2 customers were left without a connection for hours after an issue with "faulty software", while internet provider Virgin Media also went offline for customers last week.
