A storage company is investing £2m into its largest self storage facility, which will be based in the city centre.

McCarthy’s Removals and Storage has bought the former Magnet kitchen showroom and John Peters furniture store on Kirkgate.

The 21,000sq ft building is currently being refurbished and is expected to be open for business by Easter.

The facility will provide 500 storage units of various dimensions and will cater to both businesses and individuals.

At least six new jobs will also be created.

Managing director Mike McCarthy said: “We already have a strong customer base in the Wakefield area for the removals side of the business but we were very aware that there were no easily accessible storage facilities within the city.

“The two services often complement each other so we have been looking for suitable premises to invest in for some time.

“The Kirkgate building is ideal. It’s on a main road in a great location and will be easily accessible for most people as it is walking distance from the city centre.”

McCarthy’s, which has been running for more than 40 years, already has self storage facilities in Leeds and Harrogate.
