The Travelodge, on Lower Warrengate, will be taken over by Citilodge Ltd, which is part of the Citispace Group, on Monday, October 28.

The new operators will open a new bar and restaurant on the ground floor, as well as refurbishing the rooms.

Travelodge announced last year that Wakefield was one of 49 hotels it was trying to shift as part of cost-cutting drive.

Citispace Group director Robert Kidd said he hoped the firm could boost the hotel’s star rating from two to three.

He said: “We’re at an advanced stage of converting the ground floor into a bar and restaurant and creating a new reception area on the first floor.

“We’ll be making some immediate upgrades to the rooms in terms of bed linens and things like that.

“Over the course of the next three to six months, all rooms will be undergoing some refurbishment, but at no stage will this mean the hotel will have to stop trading.

“The standard of the hotel will improve but prices should stay about the same.”
