School league tables show decline in GSCE results

The number of pupils who achieved five GCSEs at grade C and above fell last year at the district’s schools, latest figures show.

In 2014 58.2 per cent of pupils got five or more GCSEs, including English and Maths, with A*-C grades, down from 66.3 per cent the previous year.

Every education authority in Yorkshire saw a drop in the number of pupils achieving five good GCSEs, and nationally the number of secondary schools considered to be under performing has doubled.

The Department for Education said the decline was caused by changes to the exams system.

Performance tables now only count a pupil’s first attempt at taking a GCSE exam, instead of including re-sits.

Some vocations qualifications have also been removed from the league tables.

Government figures show that in 2011, 57.4 per cent of Wakefield pupils got five GCSEs with grades A*-C.
